The course is part of the Petroleum Data Management MSc, for which the University has signed an agreement with Common Data Access Ltd (“CDA”), not for profit subsidiary of Oil and Gas UK. The course builds on CDA’s views regarding a body of expertise in, and a new profession of, data management in oil and gas and relevant competences and information. The course develops and explores legal and commercial and security expertise, with a focus on petroleum data management.

The course aims to provide education and training at postgraduate level for data managers both working in the petroleum sector or for those aspiring to work in the sector across its different elements and in different types of entity. The course will provide an understanding from legal, commercial and security perspectives of contemporary legal challenges involving data protection and privacy from commercial, state and activist perspectives such as big data and data mining; challenges of power and control arising from intellectual property, trade secrets and standards; evolving industrial regulatory frameworks notably reqarding the UK Oil and Gas Authority, Health and Safety Executive and the Information Commissioner; responses to activities such as malware including from the reputational perspective and attitude of funders; addressing risk in contracts (such as employment, production, contractor) and general legal bases for liability; information security management and technical standards; management response frameworks and disaster recovery.
Course will be delivered intensively in block teaching. Week 1: preparatory reading and preparation of individual blog posts (summative 10%). Week 2 block teaching and participation in seminars, including further reading during teaching week; preparation and delivery of group presentations to business leadership group with supporting document regarding new approaches needed to law and security in respect of data management and risk (summative 40%); week 3 individual written responses to a regulatory challenge or enquiry (summative 60%).
