Course Overview

By the end of this course students will be aware of issues relation to team work, particularly communication, diversity, and organisation. They will be able to communicate technical interpretation effectively by oral, written and electronic methods. They will utilise knowledge gained in the classroom to complete a number of industry-facing tasks through assessments based on real life scenarios utilising field-based data and concepts derived from lectures and field observations.

Course Description

  1. Presentation skills: oral, written and electronic (lectures and practicals)(7 hours)
  2. Diversity workshop (3 hours)
  3. Field trip: exercise in sedimentology, statigraphy, stuctural geology, tectonics, exploration geology, production geology, and economics (6 days of 8 hours in Pyrenees and 12 days of 8 hours in Utah = 144 hours
  4. Private study in preparation for trip (13 hours)

Acceptance to MSc Integrated Petroleum Geoscience required

 

This course includes approx 100 hours of teaching in the field, based on lectures and tasks set at outcrops.

Summative Assessments

Assessment of many of the skills elements is formative with instant feedback. Much of the field assessment is also formative with the instant feedback, including peer assessment.

There are five summative elements:

  1. Pyrenees: Play analysis group presentation (10%)
  2. Pyrenees: Prospect analysis group presentation (10%)
  3. Utah: rift basin play analysis, group presentation (10%)
  4. Utah: salt and sedimentation play analysis, group presentation (10%)
  5. Facies Atlas: Summary of key environments seen over the course of the two field trips (60%)
