Course Overview

Risk assessment, the common tools used for (and the legal requirement associated with) risk assessment are covered. Students will have a thorough understanding on the components of good assessment and management of risks, and be familiar with the basic requirement for HAZID, HAZOP, SIL, QRA and the Safety Case.

Course Description

The following modules will be covered in the course:
- Levels of risk assessment
- Assessment tools and legal context
- Hazard Identification Study (HAZID) and Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP)
- Safety management systems
- Safety integrity levels (SIL)
- Safety Case and Legislative requirement
- Quantified risk assessment.

Using MyAberdeen, students will be able to view weekly lectures, access associated materials and undertake on-line tutorials (content comprises approximately 2 hours of timetabled lectures and 1 hour of tutorials per week, totalling 36 hours per session).

Summative Assessments

1st attempt: 3 hour examination (80%); continuous assessment (20%).

Resit: The re-sit will comprise of re-doing the failed element/s (exam and/or coursework assessment/s) from the 1st attempt with a maximum CGS mark of D3. The marks for other elements (successfully passed) will be carried over. Resit mark of either RP or RF will be recorded.

There are no assessments for this course.

Feedback

Whole-class feedback will be provided for both coursework assignments and tutorial questions via feedback sessions (campus-based students) and via MyAberdeen (distance learning students).  Model answers and marking schemes are provided for selected coursework, tutorial questions and past exam papers. Discussion boards on MyAberdeen are employed for both general queries and specific difficulties associated with problem solving and exam preparation.
