Course Overview

ED555B Compassion is the second course in the MSc in Studies in Mindfulness. The key study theme is the role and importance of compassion within mindfulness. ED505B Compassion is unique not only in prioritising the study of compassion but also in developing compassion within mindfulness practice. Specific topics include evolutionary psychology, our compassionate nature and ‘the undercurrent and the observer’.

Course Description

The course topics are the following:

- Understanding Compassion:
  (i) Recognising one's own compassion and what gives rise to compassion;
  (ii) Developing and in-depth understanding of the concept of compassion;
  (iii) Critical engagement in self-compassion and compassion for others

- Practising Compassion:
  (i) Becoming more compassionate;
  (ii) Using compassion as a value and disposition in a professional setting;
  (iii) Identifying obstacles and challenges to practising compassion

- Critical Analysis of the Concept of Compassion: drawing upon research, relating a critical analysis of the concept of compassion to personal practice and experience and to a selected professional context.
