Course Overview

The ability to carry out and appraise clinically relevant research is a crucial aspect of working in clinical psychology. This course enables you to develop an understanding of some key clinical research methods, including systematic review, service evaluation, clinical audit, quantitative and qualitative clinical research and their application in clinical practice.

Course Description

The ability to carry out and appraise clinically relevant research is a crucial aspect of working in clinical psychology. This course introduces key clinical research methods for clinical psychology including systematic reviewing, service evaluation and clinical audit as well as quantitative and qualitative clinical research. Workshops, exercises and self-directed study will enable students to understand the fundamental principles of these methods, an appreciation of when they are appropriately employed and some of the benefits and challenges of carrying out research with clinical groups.

Students will be required to provide feedback and commentary to their peers in a variety of ways and will receive feedback on their contributions to group tasks and activities.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.

Summative Assessments

1st attempt: Systematic Review exercise (2000 to 3000 words) (60%); Clinical Project proposal (2000 to 3000 words) (40%).

Resit: Students will be able to resubmit failed elements of coursework.  Existing pass mark will be carried forward.

Feedback

Feedback on assessments will be provided according to University procedures. It is anticipated that this will be in the form of written feedback for the systematic review exercise and clinical project proposal.
