Healthcare Communication is growing area of research and patient care and satisfaction are more important than ever. This course aims to address barriers to effective communication across a range of healthcare contexts by examining authentic data and current research in the area. Topics such as Risk Communication, Patient Centred Communication, Professional Identity Development and Multidisciplinary Team working will be covered on the course.

This course will be introduced as an optional course as part of the MSc Professional Communication. Healthcare Communication is a growing area of research and patient care and satisfaction are more important than ever. This course aims to address barriers to effective communication across a range of healthcare contexts by examining authentic data and current research in the area.
The course will provide students with insights into current interdisciplinary research being carried at the University while equipping them with the necessary tools and theory to conduct a thorough analysis of healthcare discourse. Topics such as Risk Communication, Patient Centred Communication, Professional Identity Development and Multidisciplinary Team working will be covered on the course. It is hoped that this course will also appeal to medical students with an interest in effective communication in healthcare contexts.

Essay 2000-2500 words (80%); Project and presentation (20%).
Resit: One 2,500 word essay.
There are no assessments for this course.
Feedback for the essay will be delivered within 2 weeks of submission and will provide clear validation of the mark received. Students will also be welcome to discuss the outcome of their essay with the course convenor.
