This course introduces financial laws attached to petroleum exploration and exploitation with respect to the UK, alongside an introduction to international law and regulatory frameworks.

Course Description

In recognition of the fact that law and governance regimes are culturally specific the module casts a wide net on projects used as case studies but there is an emphasis on UK and Scottish experience. Specific topics are: 1. Contract Law - contractor's liability, contractual indemnities, exclusion clauses, and key contractual issues. 2. Offer and acceptance 3. Minor services contracts 4. Joint Operating Agreements, including model JOAs 5. Offshore risk management 6. Tort 7. Production Sharing Agreements 8. Maritime boundaries, stabilisation clauses and Joint Development Agreements 9. The planning system - its history and foundations 10. Theory in planning and theory of planning 11. Planning and markets 12. Planning and the sustainable development ethic: a suitable framework for planning? 13. Development plans, structure plans and the national planning framework.
