This course gives students the opportunity to develop their transferable skills that they will require not only to complete their programme of study, but also in their future career. The course covers a range of skills including IT, numeracy, academic writing, critical appraisal, note taking, presentations and time management. It also provides support for job applications through CV, cover letter and interview preparation. The course strongly relies on self-assessment and identification of opportunities by the students to use the support sessions and online resources available.

This course runs for the duration of the student’s postgraduate studies and is a blend of face-to-face sessions, workshops (primarily in the first sub-session) and online materials. The aim is to provide postgraduate students with the support to identify the skills they each need to develop and provide the resources with which to do so.
The course provides workshops on a variety of skills, including literature appraisal, academic integrity, writing, presentations, note taking and time management. It provides online resources for developing IT and numeracy skills, and with the careers service offers opportunities to develop the tools needed for job applications including CV and cover letter preparation.
Although the course itself is compulsory for many students, most of the course sessions offered are optional, and support is given to students to identify themselves what they most need to work on. The course contains formative assignments that must be completed by all students in order to complete the course.

The course contains formative assessments that are non-credit bearing but that must be completed in order to complete the course.
There are two assessments, one due at the start of the first sub-session and one towards the end of the second sub-session.
Following the completion of the first formative assessment feedback will be given highlighting the resources available to students to develop the specific skills they have highlighted need improving.
