The course provides an understanding of the flow of hydrocarbon fluids through reservoir rocks and the interplay between the fluid and rock properties and reservoir performance.

The course provides students with an understanding of the properties of reservoir rocks and fluids. Fluid flow through hydrocarbon reservoirs and the interaction between the fluids and the reservoir is examined. The course introduces concepts such as porosity and permeability and combines Darcy’s law with conservation principles to establish the diffusion equation for porous media and the radial flow of compressible and nearly incompressible fluids – with the main focus on oil. Material balance equations are developed and used to confirm reserve estimations and drive mechanism assumptions. Secondary drive mechanisms are examined with particular focus on water flooding.

1st attempt: 1 three-hour written examination paper (80%), continuous assessment (20%). A detailed breakdown will be provided at the beginning of the course.
Resit: The re-sit will comprise of re-doing the failed element/s (exam and/or coursework assessment/s) from the 1st attempt with a maximum CGS mark of D3. The marks for other elements (successfully passed) will be carried over. Resit mark of either RP or RF will be recorded.
