Focus Courses: ED50BQ Literacy Difficulties and Dyslexia OR ED50BP An Introduction to Autism and Its Implications for Classroom Practice 15 SM Points each

The focus element of this combined 30 credit module examines either literacy difficulties or autism in detail. Participants have the opportunity to explore in their practice how they might facilitate the enhanced participation of pupils facing these potential challenges in their learning.

Course Description

This course explores a range of issues in response to children and young people with autistic spectrum disorders including: • a critical examination of the nature of Autism • an understanding of the way pupils with autism experience the world • the importance of a whole school approach • the importance of collaborative working • innovative approaches to meeting pupil needs • promoting inclusive practice

This course is one of two choices which should be taken with ED50BR Participation and Learning.  The second choice is ED50BQ Literacy Difficulties and Dyslexia 15 SM Points each.

ED50BR: This course considers in detail effective practice in collaboration, and examines systems and organisational issues, as well as the development of personal skills. It also considers in particular the potential impact of collaboration on the learner.

ED50BQ: The focus element of this combined 30 credit module examines either literacy difficulties or autism in detail. Participants have the opportunity to explore in their practice how they might facilitate the enhanced participation of pupils facing these potential challenges in their learning.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.

Summative Assessments

1st attempt: Participants will be required to submit for summative assessment 1 synoptic assignment equivalent to a total of 6000 words which will draw from the work of the Autism module and PAL. Assessment will be criteria-based. Resit: There will be one opportunity to resubmit the work completed, as revised to take account of identified inadequacies in the original.
