The course involves a consideration of the development of the Christian doctrine of God and related themes from Scripture to the 20th century. It pays close attention to significant texts in the Christian tradition (including creedal statements, and the writings of Origen, Augustine, Barth, and others), and to discussions of the doctrine of the trinity. The course requires careful reading of key primary texts.

We study the Christian doctrine of God, paying close attention to significant texts on the theme from within the Christian tradition. In previous years, the work of theologians such as Origen, Augustine, Aquinas, Calvin and Barth has featured. We proceed by way of careful reading of primary material, offering attention to intra-textual issues such as form, content, method, and sources, as well as to extra-textual issues such as context and development

Seminar participation and presentation (10%) Text analysis (2,500 words) (30%) Research essay (5,000–6,000 words) (60%).
Resits will be by way of an oral examination
