Course Overview

Finance happens within the macroeconomic context whilst industries’ and firm’s operations are the subject of microeconomics. Studying finance requires this broader understanding within which financing decisions are made eg through raising debt or equity. The course covers the main elements of microeconomic theory together with underpinning macroeconomy, covering consumer theory, how consumers choose under budget constraint and the welfare effects of price changes. The problem of production will be examined to understand; the supply, demand and market structure; and how theory can be used to identify market supply and demand from empirical data.
