Course Overview

Computers are widely used in Medical Imaging. This course will cover the uses of computers for storage of imaging data and introduce concepts such as registration, filtering and signal processing that underpin the analysis of medical images.

Course Description

Aims:

  • To develop the mathematical skills required for image processing/analysis
  • To provide basic introduction in operation of computer hardware and software.
  • To show the range of computing tools and how to use them in a scientific context.
  • To introduce the principles of computer programming in a practical environment.
  • To introduce students to the applications of computing in the clinical context.
  • To provide an introduction to the philosophy of imaging

Maths for Image Processing/Analysis

Introduction to the methematical concepts that underpi image processing analysis including: calculus, convolutions, series expansions.

Image and Signal Processing                       

Introduction to basic concepts of ICT; data sampling and the Fourier Transform; image processing techniques; image display characteristics.

Software, Networking and Communications        

PACS, DICOM and image data exchange; operating systems, networking and security; software development and software lifecycle.

Legal and Safety Aspects                 

Computing and software safety issues; information governance; data protection legislation.

Computer Usage                               

Hands-on instruction and usage of graphics and imaging tools; hands-on instruction and usage of MATLAB.

Software Development / Programming     

Interactive instruction in basic concepts of computer programming, using the MATLAB programming environment. 

Philosophy of Medical Imaging    

An introduction to the philosophy of medical imaging, focusing on foundational and theoretical (metaphysical and epistemological) issues in imaging.
