Course Overview

Clinical nutrition is defined as the study of diet in relation to the development and treatment of human disease. This specialism course provides an up-to-date and detailed knowledge on the role of nutrition in the aetiology, prevention and treatment of disease in humans, with particular emphasis on disease prevention/health promotion. The course covers key topics surrounding nutrition and disease, and furthermore discusses how clinical nutrition links with public health and molecular nutrition. The course also provides an overview of research tools widely used in clinical nutrition research.

Course Description

The course provides an updated knowledge on the relationship between nutrition and disease, with particular focus on disease prevention and health promotion. The specific learning outcomes of the course are;

  1. Define Clinical Nutrition and describe its importance in maintenance of health and prevention of disease.
  2. Discuss metabolic links between nutrition and disease incidence.
  3. Discuss the role of nutrition in metabolically compromised individuals.
  4. Familiarise with research tools widely used in clinical nutrition research.
  5. Describe the inter-relationship between clinical nutrition and public health nutrition.
  6. Describe how nutrient-gene interactions affect health and disease.Degree programmes for which this course is prescribed: MSc Human Nutrition, Health and Medical sciences degrees
