This course offers students professional placements with public, civic, voluntary, development sector organisations and government agencies. placements are subject to availability and offered on a competitive basis. The course enhances students’ employability through engagement in a competitive application process; by applying academic skills in work-based environments; by developing communication and networking skills; through acquiring knowledge and understanding of health-related organisations; and by preparing and delivering a workplace report appropriate to the host organisation’s style.

Students gain a unique practical experience, a ‘real-world’ practical relevance to their work, a range of transferrable skills, professional connections and a stand-out CV.
Students are allocated two supervisors, one based in the University and one in the external organisation. Supervisors provide overall guidance and where appropriate fieldwork sites. Supervisors meet with students regularly during the course to provide support and guidance.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
• Demonstrate employability skills via successful completion of a competitive application process;
• Demonstrate insight into a particular health and/or development sector organisation as it is situated within the broader context of public, civic, voluntary, development sector organisations and government agencies;
• Demonstrate experience of putting academic theory into practice in a working environment;
• Demonstrate the development of transferable skills;
• Produce and present a Workplace Report appropriate to the host organisation’s style and prepare a personal account of the work undertaken that reflects on the process and the skills and experience gained.
Students will undertake work with a host organisation either based at the University or within the organisation, as appropriate, 1 day/week. Students will be appointed a supervisor based in the organisation, and an academic supervisor from the University. Students are expected to arrange their time and activities, including weekly meetings with supervisors for support and guidance.

Continuous assessment: following completion of the course students may make formal written applications for placement opportunities advertised at the end of the first session.
