Course Overview

This course aims to introduce students to a broad range of methods used in psychological research. Lectures cover methods used to collect physiological data (e.g. brain imaging techniques), behavioural data (e.g. measures of task performance) and self-report data (e.g. survey, questionnaire and interview techniques).   Practical classes involve students working in small groups to design studies, collect and analyse data, and write reports. Practical sessions are also used to teach students to use a statistical software package (SPSS) to analyse data collected in psychological studies.

Course Description

The course will cover;
  • Descriptive statistics and their use in Psychology.
  • Displaying data in Psychology.
  • Basic inferential statistical techniques in Psychology (t-test, correlations).
  • The basic concepts in experimental design in Psychology.
  • The basic concepts of psychological measurement using questionnaires.
  • How to write research reports in Psychology.
  • The use of SPSS in basic statistical and analytical techniques.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: 1 MCQ examination (30%) Two laboratory reports continuous assessment (60%) One SPSS open book test (10%).

Resit: Students will resubmit any failed work or re-sit any failed examination or test.
