  • The nature of competitive advantage
  • The complexity of the innovation process
  • Types of innovation
  • High level innovation challenges facing the oil and gas sector
  • Design thinking and the lean start-up
  • Creative disruption


Protect
  • Value propositions
  • Blue and Red Ocean strategy (market opportunities)
  • Clearance to operate/manage risk
  • Regulation spotting
  • Standards (benefit and risks)


Mature

  • Business models
  • Market readiness
  • Business plans
  • Idea/project pitching

The following educational themes will be addressed:

  • Critical constructive project appraisal
  • Collaboration and knowledge sharing
  • Reflective professional review

Prior to the course learners will be grouped into 'Innovation Teams'. Each team will be given an 'Innovation Challenge' .Teams will use this challenge to explore the concepts, theories and tools introduced during the course.

This course covers the following themes.  Each theme will be explored from a theoretical (Academic) and practical dimension (Professional).  Several of these themes will be explored in more depth during later modules:

  • The nature of competitive advantage
  • The complexity of the innovation process
  • Types of innovation
  • High level innovation challenges facing the oil and gas sector
  • Design thinking and the lean start-up
  • Creative disruption


Protect

  • Value propositions
  • Blue and Red Ocean strategy (market opportunities)

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.

Summative Assessments

1st attempt:

Group presentation (30%); Individual Business Plan (40%); Individual Reflective Review (30%)

Resit:

Participants who are unavailable for the group assignment due to illness, or for good cause, will be assessed on the Individual Business plan at 55% and the Reflective Review at 45%.  Participants who fail, or do not submit, any part of the Business Plan or Reflective Review are required to resubmit the work following the guidance from the course team.  For work that has failed to meet required standard, the re-submission will be capped following normal University guidance.
