OG5002: PROJECT SCOPING

15 credits

Level 5

First Term

Students scope an innovation project in Oil and Gas - under supervision - which will later be pursued in the Oil and Gas Innovation Project course.  This entails deciding on the scope of the innovation project, undertaking literature and market research, producing a realistic project plan, and considering, intellectual property rights issues (and where necessary with help from Research and Innovation ensuring a collaboration agreement is put in place with an industrial partner).

OG5003: COMMERCIALISING INNOVATION

15 credits

Level 5

First Term

This course covers the following themes.

Innovate

  • The nature of competitive advantage
  • The complexity of the innovation process
  • Types of innovation
  • High level innovation challenges facing the oil and gas sector
  • Design thinking and the lean start-up
  • Creative disruption


Protect
  • Value propositions
  • Blue and Red Ocean strategy (market opportunities)
  • Clearance to operate/manage risk
  • Regulation spotting
  • Standards (benefit and risks)


Mature

  • Business models
  • Market readiness
  • Business plans
  • Idea/project pitching

The following educational themes will be addressed:

  • Critical constructive project appraisal
  • Collaboration and knowledge sharing
  • Reflective professional review

Prior to the course learners will be grouped into 'Innovation Teams'. Each team will be given an 'Innovation Challenge' .Teams will use this challenge to explore the concepts, theories and tools introduced during the course.

OG5502: PROJECT SCOPING

Second Term

OG5503: PROJECT IN OIL AND GAS INNOVATION

120 credits

Level 5

Second Term

Undertake an innovation project - under supervision - as the basis for the completion of a dissertation which is the culmination of the taught coursework for the MSc in Oil and Gas Innovation.  The work requires reference to and integration of the various taught elements, independent research (data collection, analysis, interpretation), together with a general knowledge of all aspects of innovation (including political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal factors).  Normally projects will involve working with an industry partner, and students can be based in industry.

OG5504: PROJECT IN OIL AND GAS INNOVATION

120 credits

Level 5

Second Term

Undertake an innovation project - under supervision - as the basis for the completion of a dissertation which is the culmination of the taught coursework for the MSc in Oil and Gas Innovation part time programme.  The work requires reference to and integration of the various taught elements, independent research (data collection, analysis, interpretation), together with a general knowledge of all aspects of innovation (including political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal factors).  Normally projects will involve working with an industry partner, and students can be based in industry.

OG5901: PROJECT IN OIL AND GAS INNOVATION

120 credits

Level 5
