Petroleum geoscience is one of the main disciplines in the oil industry, and is particuarly important during exploratiuon, appraisal and production. Petroleum geologists work cosely with pteroleum engineers in modelling oilfields and the flow of fluids in the subsurface. This course provides esential information to allow petroleum engneers to interact effectively with geoscientists.

The course covers aspects of geology, geophysics and prospect evaluation to illustrate how geologists deal with uncertainty and risk during the exploration process. It will look at the place of the geoscientist during the productive life of an oilfield. Another key aspect of this course will be the issue of communication between geoscientists and engineers. By the end of this course students should understand how geologists explore for oil and gas, and the main tools at their disposal; the role of the geophysicist; how to make prospect maps; petroleum volumetrics; subsurface fluid flow; and the creation of static reservoir models.
Information on contact teaching time is available from the course guide.
1st attempt: Multiple choice examination (40%); Prospect mapping exercise (20%); Lab-based practical (40%).
Resit: Examination resit at the next available diet. Any failed coursework element will be arranges by the Course Coordinator.
There are no assessments for this course.
Summative feedback will be given on laboratory work via web link - preferably by use of Blackboard Collaborate. For studnets unable to join the live class, skype sessions will be organised. Written feedback will be given on the two assesed lab elements of assessment and general feedback will be given on the examination.
