Course Overview

This module aims to provide a common level of understanding among students on how geophysics has been used historically and is being used at present (state-of-the-art) to image the structure of the interior of the Earth and to make inferences about the geodynamic processes within the Earth responsible for formation of its surface and near surface (including sedimentary basin formation) where society lives and relies upon the exploitation of its resources.

Course Description

1. Physics of the Earth
2. Interior of the Earth:historical and modern seismology
3. Shape of the Earth and geodetic/mapping principles
4. Plate tectonics: driving mechanics and stresses in and deformation of the lithosphere.
5. Sedimentary basin formation and architure and influences on the petroleum system.
6. Crustal setting of ore deposits and processes of formation.
7. Mathematical principles relevant to geophysical methods: review and remedial tutorials.

Summative Assessments

Assessment:  There are in-course exercises, including self-directed remedial mathematics, for formative feedback as well as an initial test to determine mathematical skills to allow assessment of potential remedial work. The Summative element consists of one or more assigned exercises, totalling 50% of the assessment, and an examination (50%)
