The course introduces concepts involved in offshore brownfield structural engineering, including case studies and design examples for small, medium and large projects, as well as an overview of lifting guidance, structural integrity management and offshore survey information.
Emphasis will be placed on good detailing and clarity of presentation of design calculations.
This course is delivered by Distance Learning only for students studying for the MSc Oil & Gas Structural Engineering. Students will access the teaching content via MyAberdeen and the course tutor will answer queries and provide guidance through an on-line forum.

The course is delivered in 5 chapters as follows:
1. Brownfield Structural Engineering Overview
2. Brownfield Framed Structures
3. Lifting with Structural Steelwork
4. Lifting and Rigging Guidelines
5. Project Examples
3 coursework assignments (20, 20% and 60%). The first two assignments will demonstrate that the student can use previous examples as a basis for a new design. The third assignment will be an example of a non-standard project requirement which will encourage students to use fundamental understanding to create a design which is sound and economic.

1st attempt: four coursework assignments (20%, 20%, 20% and 30%).
Resit: The re-sit will comprise of re-doing the failed element/s (exam and/or coursework assessment/s) from the 1st attempt with a maximum CGS mark of D3. The marks for other elements (successfully passed) will be carried over. Resit mark of either RP or RF will be recorded.
There are no assessments for this course.
The course is taught via distance learning where students access course material through MyAberdeen. Course tutors discuss and reply to queries through online discussion boards to give continual feedback throughout the semester.
Students receive individual, written feedback following assignments.
