This course explores the changing discourses linked to community work in different settings and their impact on the design and management of current community projects. It will also provide an opportunity to explicitly engage with current issues in the field of practice with an appreciation of their historical, social and political contexts.

• Histories of community education and their relevance to the profession today • Discourses linked to stages and settings of the community education field. e.g. youth work, adult education, multicultural education, disability, rural and urban issues, ABE, homelessness, literacies • Social practices perspectives and wealth models of participation across a range of settings • Policy frameworks and the rationale for work with identified individuals and groups • Critical analysis of needs, wants, desires and entitlements • Planning interventions in contrasting settings, recognising and tackling barriers to participation • Evaluation of intervention according to characteristics linked to the relevant stage and settings

1st attempt: Continuous assessment 100% Task 1 (75%) Assessed on the CAS Scale Students will provide a presentation to the learning community in which they critically analyse two contrasting stages and settings and the interventions they have undertaken in these two settings. The presentation will use appropriate technologies to enable it to be shared online with the community. As a guide, it should be approximately 20 minutes long. It will be assessed against the following criteria: • Critical analysis of community work in two contrasting settings undertaken • Discussion of the history of stages and settings and changing discourses, including the link to current practice • Analysis of the professional capabilities required to work both in and across stages and settings Task 2 (25%) Pass/ Fail In a group, students will facilitate the exploration within the learning community of a current issue in community work. They should plan how they will engage others in dialogue about the issue, resource the investigation and summarise the outcomes of the collective reflection. Assessment Criteria There will be evidence of: • Participation as a member of the group • Planning to engage others in professional dialogue • Providing resources to support dialogue • Synthesis of evidence from a range of perspectives in relation to a current issue of professional significance. To pass the course students must pass both parts of the assessment. Resit: One resubmission of either part if deemed unsatisfactory. Task 1: Resubmission of presentation. Task 2 may require an alternative task if participation in group is not possible:1500 word critical reflection on a current issue in community work.
