Course Overview

The course provides students with the opportunity to explore contemporary theories of language development and engage with the role of the professional in supporting the development of language and literacy across the age ranges 0-3, 3-5 and 5-8, but with a particular focus on the age range of the setting in which they are employed. The course will further build on core aspects of early years education previously studied in units ED50P7 and ED50P8.

Course Description

Students, working collaboratively in action learning sets, will engage with online resources and practical workshops around the areas of:

  • Practitioner specific knowledge and understanding of language pedagogy, environment and intervention

Theories of language acquisition including those based on up to date research in 

  • neuroscience
  • Communication as a multi-layered, complex and highly skilled cognitive process
  • The role of the practitioner, the role of the child and the role of culture in meaning making

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.

Summative Assessments

First attempt: Participants will be required to submit a summative assessment of 6000 words built upon a series of tasks linked to the core themes of the course and utilising a range of reporting formats. Students will complete two formative tasks of 1000 words, submitted for formative feedback from peers and tutors, together with one 4000 word report, drawing on these tasks and a piece of small-scale professional enquiry within their own setting. Assessment will be criteria-based. 

Resit: There will be one opportunity to resubmit the work completed as revised to take account of identified inadequacies in the original submission.
