Course Overview

This is the first module in the Into Headship PG certificate Programme. The aim of the course is to enable participants to understand their role as head teachers in applying the principles and practices of strategic leadership to frame and conceptualise educational problems and issues. The course provides opportunities for students to develop and to demonstrate knowledge and understanding, skills, qualities and other attributes in the following areas. It is based upon the model of professional learning which comprises four interdependent components: critical reflection, knowledge building, experiential learning and social learning processes.

Course Description

Course content will cover:

The course is based upon the model of professional learning which comprises four interdependent components: critical reflection, knowledge building, experiential learning and social learning processes.

·       Strategic leadership – building knowledge through reading and accessing literature and other sources of information to formulate principles of strategic leadership in the role of the head teacher in relation to component so the Standards for Headship

·       Critical policy analysis – critical analysis of the wider local, national and global policy context to identify, frame and conceptualise a strategic educational issue pertinent to the school and community on the basis of evidence and educational argument

·       Use of evidence-based resources to inform decisions and practice

·       Problem setting with stakeholders

·       Developing as a strategic leader – participants will critically review their self-evaluation against the Standard for Headship in the Standards for Leadership and Management (GTCS 2012)

·       Social process of learning: working with fellow course members to undertake collaborative tasks – working with and leading staff and stakeholders to review a  strategic change programme.

Summative Assessments

First attempt: Participants will be required to submit for summative assessment, assignment(s) equivalent to 4,000 words. There will be two elements to the assignment and participants must satisfy both elements in order to receive a pass grade Part1 of the assessment = 2,500 words; Part 2 of the assessment 1,500 words.

Resits: A revised version of the appropriate part of the assessment will be required in the event of a submission failing to meet the assessment criteria.
