The Qur'an is the main text of Islam – the divine word. This course will discuss traditional and scholarly approaches to the Qur'anic text, its history, structure, themes and challenges with which it confronts the readers. We will examine various exegetical and scholarly approaches to the Qur'an, and various options for understanding some Qur'anic chapters. We will also explore other Islamic and scholarly literature that developed around the Qur'an.

This course will discuss the main text of Islam – the Qur'an, the divine word. We will discuss traditional and scholarly approaches to the history of the text, its structure, themes and challenges with which it confronts the readers. We will examine various exegetical approaches to the Qur'an, as well as scholarly approaches, and various possibilities of understanding some Qur'anic chapters. We will also explore other Islamic and scholarly literature that developed around the Qur'an.

2 book reviews of 1,000 words each, 10% each (20%); Essay plan and annotated bibliography (1000 words) (10%); A 5,000 word essay (70%).
