Course Overview

This course aims to deliver a `best practices’ primer on human resource (H.R.) activities associated with successful organizations in the private and public sector. Students will gain an understanding of the linkages between various HR policies and procedures, and key organizational outcomes. Furthermore, they will gain the ability to critically appraise and analyse various methods of organizing and employing human resources in the organizational context. Learning will be encouraged by student and instructor interaction, reading, class discussions, and group work. The course integrates academic research findings on HR topics with practical issues faced by individuals in the workplace.

Course Description

At the end of the course students will have an understanding of:  The way strategic HRM issues are operationalised at a practical level.  The way in which successful structural and cultural change in organisations has to be informed by sound HR practice.  The requirements that underpin successful initiatives in an international perspective.  The factors that underpin successful initiatives in work and organisation design.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.

Summative Assessments

Individual Piece: 3000 word written report (70% of total course marks) ; Group Piece comprising 20 minute Presentation (15%) and 1000 word Briefing Note (15% ). Students must attempt all elements to pass the course.   Recordings of the presentations will be kept for external examiner review.

 

Resit: If a student fails to reach a pass mark of CGS D3 overall, they may be permitted to undertake a resit of the substantive assignment.
