Course Overview

Whether you are intending to manage other people or be responsible for HR functions in a company, this course is intended for you.

You will learn the theories that are the basis for good practice, the skills that are required to put them across and the employment law which governs what we are expected to achieve with our people

This course is run by tutors who have been experienced managers themselves and it will prepare you to pursue a career in management confident and competent to carry out what is expected of you

Course Description

The aim of this course is to provide students with the conceptual and prescriptive tools to enable them to understand, identify, diagnose and analyse the principal people management issues facing managers of organisations in the contemporary economy. The course confronts the complexities of managing people in organisations by examining different theoretical approaches to motivation, commitment, performance, conflict and performance. Following these frameworks the course confronts contemporary approaches to communication and participation, and key management issues of reward, training, team-working, equality and discrimination. Topical subjects such as work-life balance and family-friendly employment are also explored with emphasis to their applicability in the new or “knowledge” sectors of the economy.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.

Summative Assessments

1st attempt: 1. An individual assessment based on an assignment of 2,000 words (40% of total course marks) 2. A group presentation as a consultancy group to an audience of interested managers (30% of the total course marks) (note – slides/copies of presentation will be kept with a view to allowing external examiner review. 3. An individual Professional Reflective Review comprising 30% of the total course marks).

Resit: There is no resit opportunity for the group element. For the individual elements students who score below D3 will be required to submit the respective elements within six weeks of the mark and feedback being returned.
