Course Overview

Applied statistics introduces students to statistical concepts involved in the appropriate design, analysis and interpretation of research in health settings, covering aspects of data types and presentation of data; probability; samples, distributions, statistical inference; hypothesis testing; univariate parametric and non-parametric methods and correlation with an introduction to regression.

Course Description

The course contains the following topics: data types and presentation, probability, introduction statistical inference and hypothesis testing, hypothesis testing for continuous variables (parametric and non-parametric), hypothesis testing for categorical variables, measures of effect (odds ratio and risk ratio), correlation and simple linear regression, measures of agreement.

Summative Assessments

Assessment will be through three time-limited MCQs each 10% (30%), individual critical appraisal (20%) [written assignment 2500 words], main data analysis using SPSS (40%) [electronic submission], peer assessment of the main data analysis (5%), participation on discussion boards and collaborative sessions (5%).
