Course Overview

This course teaches students in the field of health psychology how to conduct high quality behavioural research, how to become an informed consumer of research, and how to think and operate within a professional, ethical framework.

Course Description

 

At the end of the course, students will be able to;

1. Critically appraise research evidence.

2. Generate high quality research questions.

3. Make informed judgements about the appropriate study design to use in different situations.

4. Critically appraise a wide range of different study designs (including RCTs, case-controls, cohorts, cross-sectional, before and after, n-of-1, case series).

5. Identify potential sources of bias in research studies and develop strategies to minimise.

6. Design and conduct studies in line with best practice ethics and research governance guidelines.

7. Identify ethical issues in research/practice and manage / resolve them appropriately

8. Construct a methodologically robust questionnaire and evaluate its psychometric properties.

9. Conduct a qualitative interview study /analyse data using qualitative methods.

10. Design a diary / EMA study and analyse the resulting data

11. Manage the practical and ethical challenges associated with secondary, routine and linked data.

12. Report research results in line with best practice recommendations and tailor research dissemination to different audiences (public, policy, media, academic)
