Last modified: 25 Mar 2016 11:38

Course Overview

This interactive course focuses on some of the key, current challenges to the conservation of biodiversity. Through fieldtrips, debates, discussions and lectures we will explore different perspectives and the role of science in helping find solutions. During the course we will have an opportunity to explore issues in depth with land managers and leading conservation NGOs. The course therefore offers a unique opportunity to discuss major issues in conservation today with those on the front-line, consider different world views and debate alternative strategies for tackling these challenges.

Course Description

Conservation is a rich and fascinating field, full of lively debates and arguments. This brief course is designed to give you an insight into this world through lectures, discussions, fieldtrips and debates. We will start by exploring some of the arguments related to the role of biodiversity conservation in the modern world – what are the objectives, arguments and the strategies employed? We will focus on conservation outside protected areas and explore 2 issues in more depth: i) the challenges and conflicts around conservation, with a focus on the UK uplands, and ii) agri-environment schemes with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, around their reserve at Strathbeg.

By the end of the three weeks you will:

- Have solid grounding in underlying principles in Conservation

- Critically assess the underpinning science to identify appropriate conservation action and identify where further research is required to reduce uncertainty.

- Gain experience of major issues, debates & conflicts in Conservation

- Be capable of expressing a reasoned opinion on current conservation practice and future strategy
