The aim of this course is to provide a structured method for researching various forms of materials and sources with a critical approach for evaluation and appraisal. This course will allow the development of the necessary research skills required to undertake the independent project. Other skills developed include CV preparation, interview practice and group working techniques.

Assessment of many of the skills elements is formative with instant feedback. Much of the field assessment is also formative with instant feedback, including peer assessment. There are four summative elements: 1. Team poster presentations on an aspect of the energy industry. (20%) 2. An individual PowerPoint presentation arguing a case for a particular course of action in the energy industry. (30%) 3. A team presentation on an aspect of the field trip. (20%) 4. An individual proposal for their main research project in course GL5923. (30%)
