Course Overview

The student will select, undertake and complete a research-based dissertation project. In choosing and approving a suitable topic, consideration will be given to the student's background and skills, their career interests, suitable data availability, and the possibility of an external placement. Successful completion of the project requires reference to and integration of the various different taught elements, independent research, together with a general knowledge of all aspects of GIS and where appropriate different disciplines. The dissertation project is undertaken by the student with the guidance of a supervisor from the University and in some cases an external advisor.

Course Description

Select and undertake a relevant research project - under supervision - as the basis for the completion of a dissertation which is a culmination of the taught coursework of the MSc. in GIS. In choosing and approving a suitable topic, consideration will be given to the student's background and skills, their career interests, suitable data availability, and an external placement. The work requires reference to and integration of the various different taught elements, independent research, together with a general knowledge of all aspects of GIS and where appropriate different disciplines. Students will work on the project in association with the placement.

The dissertation project is undertaken by the student with the guidance of a supervisor from the Department/School, and an external (government/industry/commercial/academic) advisor within the associated organisation providing support and placement.

Summative Assessments

100% Continuous Assessment. The Dissertation/Thesis Project Report (10,000-15,000 words) will comprise submission of a written proposal (10%), an oral presentation (10%) in front of a specialist panel; the written dissertation/thesis project (80% - dissertation (70%), presentation (15%) and Poster (15%)).
