Course Overview

The course will develop the capabilities of engaging and working with communities to plan in partnership and seeks to develop the critical understandings and attitudes that underpin these capabilities. Participants will be introduced to a variety of creative means of engaging with diverse perspectives.  The course assessment will require them to work with others in their professional context to compile a community profile.

Course Description

• Discipline contexts and discourses that frame practice e.g. Historical, Economic, Sociological, Psychological; Anthropological; Political • Policy frameworks at international, national and local levels that have an impact on practice • Community profiles: identifying community characteristics and developing work related profiles • Concepts of social capital: theories for and against the notion of social capital • Community capacity building: approaches to development of community capacity including the role of collaborative working • Values: using the value base implicitly in engaging and working with communities • Access practices, consultation, needs analyses and relationship building skills
