Course Overview

The aim of this course is to develop an understanding of public health and how research skills can be applied in practice. Students will develop a critical awareness of the 3 domains of public health: health protection, health promotion and health service improvement. Topics covered by the course include: Health Care Needs and Services; Health Protection and Environmental Health; Health Improvement; Health Screening; Health Psychology; Health Economics; Organisation and Management of Healthcare; Policy and Strategy

Course Description

At the end of this course the students will be equipped to:

·         Interpret and present health information

·         Apply needs assessment theory to research

·         Apply epidemiology methods to health protection

·         Understand health promotion theory

·         Evaluate a screening programme

·         Understand how health psychology relates to maintain health, preventing and treating disease

·         Understand and apply the basic principles of economic appraisal

·         Apply management models and theories to the public health context

·         Draw out policy implications from research

 

This course will be delivered through a combination of teaching methods including lectures, interactive group sessions and self-directed small group research with a 2 hour session on Wednesday afternoon in the second semester.
