This course offers you a grounding in research within contemporary nursing, midwifery and health care, with a specific focus on qualitative research. Initially you will consider the development of research and related audit/service evaluation activities. You will also have opportunities to develop your skills of literature searching and critiquing research. You will then be introduced to key qualitative approaches, methods to generate, handle and analyse qualitative data and the importance of rigour, quality and ethics. During the course you will gain insight into the practicalities of undertaking qualitative research via practical workshop activities, facilitated by experienced researchers.

This course will enable you to critically explore evidence based practice (EBP) within modern professional health care. Current sources of evidence are identified, discussed and critically appraised. Application to professional practice is a key feature of this course and you will consider strategies to plan, implement and evaluate change in response to relevant evidence. You will be encouraged to draw on your clinical and professional interests to consider effective strategies to overcome barriers to using EBP. Guest speakers from clinical practice and research settings ensure that the course content reflects contemporary health care.

This course provides you with an opportunity to think critically and holistically about your profession of nursing or midwifery. You will consider drivers which underpin professional roles, the advancement of nursing and midwifery and you will reflect on your current role. Inter-professional issues, intra-professional working and workforce agendas are considered within local, national and international contexts, taking account of current policy agendas and drivers. Guest speakers ensure that this course is rooted in current professional practice. You will be required to contribute to lively seminar debates, reflecting on your professional advancement.

This course provides you with the opportunity to undertake a piece of research or other scholarly investigation in nursing or a relevant health field. You will build on your learning during your MSc study to date, further developing your academic skills and culminating in the writing of a 12,500 word thesis. You will be able to select from a range of projects offered by academic staff within the Division of Applied Health Science, and you will receive academic supervision. You will aim to produce piece of work that is suitable for subsequent publication to enhance your career.
