LS551M: ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS RELATING TO ENERGY PRODUCTION (2014-2015)

Last modified: 28 Jun 2018 10:27

Course Overview

This course aims to introduce students to problems encountered in the United States in developing energy resources using hydraulic fracturing so that they think about strategies to reduce pollution. Concerns about health and the environment related to the production of energy are addressed through an analysis of statutory, administrative, and regulatory responses. A detailed consideration of hydraulic fracturing operations discloses opportunities for protecting human health and the environment while developing energy resources.

Course Description

The production of energy involves externalities, market failures, regulation, and litigation. Hydraulic fracturing employing toxic chemicals under high pressures is accompanied by releases of undesirable emissions and hazardous flowback fluids. Accidents can lead to further damages, especially when toxic chemicals are undisclosed and local responders are not trained to deal with the hazards. Concerns about health and the environment related to the production of energy are addressed through an analysis of statutory, administrative, and regulatory responses. A detailed consideration of hydraulic fracturing operations discloses opportunities for protecting human health and the environment while developing energy resources.
