Course Overview

This course will provide students with an in depth understanding of discourse and communication in organisational contexts. It will enhance knowledge in core areas of communicative strategy in management and team interactions in business settings. Students will gain the skills to interpret and analyse goal driven language in professional communities across a variety of contexts.

Course Description

This course will examine organisational interaction and communication within a business and management context. Key features of institutional discourse and effective communication will be considered in order to provide students with the skills necessary to conduct a linguistic analysis of different aspects of business communication and interaction. Core areas of this course will focus on the discourse practices of meetings, transactional and relational talk in business contexts and intercultural communication.

Essay on guided reading (3,000 words) (40%); discourse analysis essay on aspect of professional workplace interaction (60%).
