Course Overview

This course gives an introduction to basic accounting and finance concepts, with particular emphasis on their application to Project Management.

The course addresses three main sets of topics:

·         Financial accounting, financial reporting, and accounts interpretation

·         Management accounting, with particular emphasis on project accounting issues

·         Project appraisal, using discounted cash flows and related techniques

It also considers the relationships between these and the organisational and behavioural context in which they are relevant.

Course Description

The course is run as four modules, with campus based lectures and workshops relayed to distance learning students by streamed video.  Each module addresses two or three topics.

The coursework will generally comprise one large exercise – e.g. the preparation of a flexible project budget model – and a set of objective tests based on the material from each module.

There are practical exercises associated with each topic, with worked solutions provided after the module is delivered.  There is also a whole course workbook which helps students to develop numerical skills relevant to the final assessment.  Selected past exam papers, with worked solutions, are also provided.
