Course Overview

This course examines the solar and geothermal energy industries including resources, technologies, practical implementation, development, barriers, environmental and sustainable issues. Some case studies are investigated for solar and geothermal energy projects. Students will carry out a design project to enhance their intellectual ability and transferable skills.

Course Description

Thai am of the course is to provide an understanding of generation from solar and geothermal sources, the associated technologies and the main technical challenges. The course syllabus is as follows:

·         Sun solar spectrum, effects of earth’s atmosphere, orbit and rotation on insolation.

·         Concentrated solar thermal power generation.

·         Externalities of solar energy conversion.

·         Cost considerations of solar energy conversion.

·         Power electronics devices for photovoltaics.

·         Grid-connected PV systems.

·         Isolated PV systems & storage.

·         Network integration, connection standards, codes and practice.

·         A detailed design project of a PV energy conversion based system.

·         Concepts for geothermal energy and development of drilling technologies.

·         Economical viability of geothermal resources.

·         Different land geological structure including hard rock and high temperature/pressure conditions.

·         Geothermal power station footprint and its requirements.
