Course Overview

This course is designed to support and develop participants as they take a critical, strategic view of their research and the wider academic research environment. This is achieved through engaging participants with the key factors in developing a research profile, (collaborations, networks and consortia) and through exploring the institutional, UK and global research environments while also stressing the importance of leadership qualities, public engagement activities, professional development and reflective practice to build a successful higher education research career. This course is aligned with the UK Professional Standards Framework for Learning & Teaching in H.E.

Course Description

This course considers the factors essential to building a research career and the challenges of becoming a research leader. A key focus of this module is to develop an understanding of strategic career planning in terms of funding, engagement, esteem, management and leadership. The course includes: securing research funding, knowledge exchange and commercialisation, effective research leadership, project management, public engagement in higher education research and research dissemination.

Summative Assessments

• 2,500 word reflective analysis (or equivalent) on receiving feedback on either a publication or a research grant proposal, or a public engagement activity (40%) • 3,500 word reflective analysis (or equivalent) on personal research strategy and plan which includes strategies for development towards becoming a research leader (60%).
