This course explores the links between the diagnostic criteria for autism (difficulties with social communication, social interaction, flexibility of thought & sensory integration) and behaviour. We critically explore positive, evidence-based approaches to identifying solutions. We also critically examine the links between the national strategy for autism, theory and practice and the meaning of the notion of the ‘autism friendly workplace’. Students are introduced to strategies for reflecting critically upon workplace provision via structured auditing and action planning for change.

· This is an interprofessional course for practitioners from Education, Health, Social Care and the Voluntary Sector.
· This is a ‘specialist’ course so all participants must have some knowledge and understanding of autism in order to undertake the courses
· All participants must have access to a workplace for the purposes of the assignments which are all workplace-based.
· All courses are ‘face-to-face’ delivery
· Course 1 is ‘core’ i.e. it must be completed before any of the other courses can be undertaken
· Course 3 can only be undertaken after completion of courses 1 and 2.

Formative assessment will be a further feature throughout the course through discussion, group activities and individual reflective and evaluative tasks. Participants will also be asked to keep a Professional Diary. Summative assessment will take the form of a 6000-word submission (written or mixed media) focused directly on workplace applications. There will be one opportunity to re-submit assignments that have been revised to take account of tutor feedback.
