Course Overview

This course introduces students to key issues integral to educational research (such as the nature of practitioner enquiry in educational research, the relationship amongst: research, policy and practice, critical reading of texts, research and policy, and different views of knowledge). The course aims to explore the links between educational research, policy and practice and to develop the skills associated with the critical reading and evaluation of policy documentation and research texts.

Course Description

This course creates a context for the programme, setting out the demands of postgraduate study and asking what does it mean to ‘do’ social/educational research? The course covers:

 A consideration of what social/educational research is and its diversity

  • Evaluating research: what does good social/educational research look like?
  • Developing reading skills necessary to constructively analyse and deconstruct published research reports,
  • Examining perspectives in research methodology, introducing the philosophical issues underpinning the design and implementation of research
A consideration of the relationships between social/educational research  and the development of policy and practice, including the nature of ‘evidence-based’ practice.

Summative Assessments

1st attempt: participants will be required to submit for summative assessment assignment(s) equivalent to 3000 words taking account of different reporting formats. Assessment will be criterion-based.

Resit: one opportunity to resubmit the assignment will be permitted, as revised to take account of identified inadequacies in the original.
