Course Overview

This course introduces key concepts, concerns and methodologies within Memory and Heritage Studies. It allows students to develop skills in theoretical and critical debate, applied to the study of a specific set of cultural case studies ranging from the Holocaust to postcolonialism.

Course Description

This course introduces key concepts, concerns and methodologies within memory and heritage studies. Key areas will typically include, but are not limited to: places of memories, practices of commemoration, monuments, collective memory, decolonisation, cultural heritage, applied to case studies such as the Holocaust and postcolonial contexts.

The course allows students to develop theoretical and critical skills, applied within transnational frameworks. Students will study both theoretical and cultural texts, and will be able to pursue further research on specific texts and topics.

Individual design of a remembrance project around cultural heritage in the student’s local context. This involves creative design as well as substantial commentary about the conceptualisation of the design.
