EG55M3: ENERGY CONVERSION AND STORAGE (2024-2025)

Last modified: 23 Jul 2024 10:59

Course Overview

To gain an understanding of the need to and the efficiency behind conversion of energy form one form to another and in the need to store energy in distinct forms. To understand the reasoning behind energy losses and how they might be minimised or overcome.

Course Description

This course examines the interconnection between different forms of energy, the fundamental thermodynamics which limits the efficiency of energy conversion, device design limitations and the different ways in which energy might be stored

The syllabus is the following:

Lectures 1 and 2: First and second laws of thermodynamics. Lecture 3: Vapour power plants and cycle efficiency. Lecture 4: Source efficiency. Combustion. Lectures 5 to 6: Fuel cells. Lectures 7 to 8: Energy conversion. Biomass. Lectures 9 and 10: Energy supply and demand, the options. Lectures 11 to 18: Hydrogen. Physical and Chemical storage. Generation from fossil and renewable sources. Application as a fuel. Lectures 19 to 22: Mechanical, electrochemical and electrical storage. Lecture 23: Thermal storage. Lecture 24: Energy vectors and integration in the network

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.
