This course is the final of three Work Based Learning courses which make up 60 credits of the level 4 programme in the Graduate Apprenticeship in BEng in Civil Engineering, and is only available to students on that programme. It should be noted that the three courses account for 25 credits, 25 credits and 10 credits, respectively.
Taken together, the three courses aim to complete a wide range of learning outcomes derived from the student’s professional practice. This final course in the sequence is for the student to reflect on the role of the Work Based Learning courses in levels 3 and 4, and the Professional Development courses at levels 1 and 2, on the student’s own personal development as a Professional Engineer. The module is to delivered over the final summer teaching session of the programme.

This course is a 10 credit course running over the shorter summer session, at the conclusion of the Graduate Apprenticeship programme.
As well as the opportunities for reflection and discussion with colleagues in the Workplace, there will be weekly scheduled online tutorial sessions (as holidays allow, given this is over the summer teaching session, although tutor coverage will try to be arranged in those circumstances) with the University tutor to discuss the progress of the intended outcomes and the progress towards the submission of the work for assessment.
The course will be assessed by both a submitted essay at its conclusion, and by Oral Examination, both of whose aims and assessment deliverables will be agreed prior to the commencement of the course. The Oral Examination will require the student to deliver online (via a live session on Collaborate Ultra on MyAberdeen) a PowerPoint presentation about the project, on which they will be interviewed. This assessment model was also adopted in the level 3 WBL courses, and continues a standard pattern of assessment.

Only ONE of the following two topics will be required for this course, but by the end of Work Based Learning 5, both of these Topics should have been submitted. This course can be either Topic 1 or 2. An essay of no more than 5000 words is required in which the student reflects on the role of the Professional Development and Work Based Learning courses over the four years of the Graduate Apprenticeship programme in the student’s own development as a Professional Engineer. The feedback will be provided within three weeks of submission as either written notes separate from the essay or as annotations on the submitted essay document. |

Resit involves a re-submission of whichever of the submitted pieces of work was failed, each with their original weighting (both are 50%), and the resit mark will incorporate the original grade for whichever assessment was achieved. If the Essay was not achieved then it will need to be re-submitted. It will have a 5000 word limit as before. If the failed assessment was the Oral Examination (and PowerPoint presentation) then this will need to be carried out again. It will be subject to the same time limits as before – 15 minutes of presenting and 15 minutes of questioning. |
