This course engages students in critical reflection on the history, theology and practice of worship leading and preaching within the Reformed tradition in the context of contemporary Christian ministry.
This course will examine the various traditions of worship within the church, before discussing the liturgical calendar and the seasons of the Christian Year. It will consider the component parts of worship including the reading of Scripture, prayers, hymns and songs. It will also review the use of media, online services and intergenerational worship.
It will further explore the discipline of homiletics and the verbal communication of the Christian gospel in the context of public worship and beyond. Topics will include the theology of preaching, the role of biblical exegesis in sermon preparation, the forms and aims of the sermon, the place of preaching within the context of Christian worship and the question of effective communication to diverse audiences.
We shall engage these topics through a combination of directed reading, recorded lectures, formative exercises, tutorial discussion and summative assessments.
