Course Overview

The second compulsory taught course on the PG Cert, ‘Activities, Knowledge & Values’ will address 5 themes (each delivered in a two-week block), which will be delivered as 5 synchronous interactive seminars (90 minutes). There will be fortnightly, asynchronous discussion-board activities, short video recordings, and topical readings. Overall, this course will balance theory with reflective practice in learning and teaching in higher education.

Course Description

The course will comprise 5 topical themes in learning and teaching in higher education, as outlined below. For each theme, the asynchronous activities will precede their synchronous session. 

1: Reasons to Teach

  • A reflective opening to this PG Cert course, to reflect on learning from the first course, and to allow for insightful discussions from participants about their own professional development.

2: Value of Theories for Learning 

  • Translating theory into practice.

3: Audience and Obstacles 

  • A topical theme addressing major issues in higher education’
  • Align teaching and assessment approaches to appropriate SCQF Levels.

4: Nurturing a Learning Community 

  • Investing in people, staff, and students.

5: Concepts: Fit for Practice? 

  • Does the conceptualisation of theorising academia work in practice?

This course is fully aligned with the UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching & Supporting Learning in H.E. It is divided into five online sessions, supported by four formative assessments and one summative assessment. Course materials, including pre-session learning activities and online delivery utilise the University’s virtual learning environment, MyAberdeen.
