This course will enable you to carry out a piece of original ethnographic research. You will design, conduct and write up a research project that uses ethnographic methods. A key feature is individual support from an experienced supervisor who will guide you each step of the way. The course will suit those who have an idea for an ethnographic research project and who already have training or experience in ethnographic research methods.

This course will take you through all the stages of successfully conducting a small-scale ethnographic research project. With the support of a supervisor, you will select a topic relevant to you that can be explored with ethnographic methods and develop a research proposal on it. You will then apply for ethical approval and, once granted, carry out the research. You will gain skills in research design and practical experience in applying ethnographic research methods. In writing up your project, you will learn how to analyse ethnographic data and write up your research in an appropriate style, taking into account your theoretical framing and your intended audience.
Through a combination of recorded lectures and supervision meetings, we will cover specific topics including creating a research proposal, learning from previous research, analysing qualitative data, and writing up your results. Week by week, teaching materials will open up new perspectives on doing research and give you the confidence to become a successful ethnographic researcher.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
