EG40G3: WORK-BASED LEARNING 4 (2022-2023)

Last modified: 29 May 2024 07:16

Course Overview

This course is the first of three Work Based Learning courses which make up 60 credits of the level 4 programme in the Graduate Apprenticeship in BEng in Civil Engineering, and is only available to students on that programme.  It should be noted that the three courses account for 25 credits, 25 credits and 10 credits, respectively.

Taken together, the three courses aim to complete a wide range of learning outcomes derived from the student’s professional practice, but the two 25 credit courses (of which this is the first) have interchangeable topics, the order of delivery of which is not specifiedSuch flexibility in the order of delivery of topics was also a feature of the three WBL courses in Level 3, but it should be noted that in level 4 this flexibility is only applied to the first two WBL courses (each of 25 credits).

This flexibility in choosing which topic is done in first half session, and which in second half session, deliberately allows Employers to adjust the order of delivery of  the learning outcomes (given below), in a manner which takes into account their type of business.

Course Description

This course is a 25 credit course running over the first half session.  Which of the learning outcomes are to be the focus of this course, and how they are to achieved and assessed will be agreed with the student and the Employer prior to the beginning of the course.

The topics in the three level 4 WBL courses are as follows:

  • Literature Review (25 credits)
  • Design (25 credits)
  • Review on Professional Development (10 credits)

As well as Work Based Learning there will be six fortnightly scheduled online tutorial sessions with the University tutor to discuss the progress of the intended outcomes and the progress towards the submission of work for assessment.

The course will be assessed by both a submitted report at its conclusion, and by Oral Examination, both of whose aims and assessment deliverables will be agreed prior to the commencement of the course.  The Oral Examination will require the student to deliver online (via a live session on Collaborate Ultra on MyAberdeen) a PowerPoint presentation about the project, on which they will be interviewed.  This assessment model was also adopted in the level 3 WBL courses, and continues a standard pattern of assessment.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.

Resit involves a re-submission of whichever of the submitted pieces of work was failed, each with their original weighting (both are 50%), and the resit mark will incorporate the original grade for whichever assessment was achieved

Depending on the topic, if the report or essay was not achieved then it will need to be re-submitted.  It will have a 5000 word limit as before.

If the failed assessment was the Oral Examination (and PowerPoint presentation) then this will need to be carried out again.  It will be subject to the same time limits as before – 15 minutes of presenting and 15 minutes of questioning.
