Course Overview

Public health is the art and science of improving health through the organised efforts of society. This course provides an introduction to a population-based perspective on health, illness and disease. The course illustrates the practical application of numerical ways of thinking about the health of a population. The course covers the three major public health domains of Health Improvement, Health Protection and Healthcare Public Health.

This course aims to support students in developing a critical understanding of the breadth of public health approaches to protecting, promoting, monitoring and improving health among a population as a whole.

Course Description

The course covers the core concepts of public health (such as population at risk, prevention, burden of disease, effective intervention, monitoring population health and health inequalities) across the three major public health domains of Health Improvement, Health Protection and Healthcare Public Health.

The course is predominantly based around a numerical ‘health needs assessment’ approach (burden of ill-health and effective intervention) with the provision of support/services in the context of political-economic-social circumstances to improving the health of a population.

The course provides an opportunity for postgraduate students to select a ‘health needs assessment topic’ on which to undertake a brief/rapid health needs assessment.
